Desert tour of 4 days from Marrakech to discover the south-east and its heritage, its secrets then head south to the Dades and Drâa valleys with a stopover in the Merzouga desert, where you can enjoy a desert adventure, take a camel ride and sleep in the Berber desert camp; enjoy a magnificent sunset and sunrise over the golden sand dunes of erg chebbi.
Departure south through the High Atlas at the Tichka Pass and the Onilla Valley to reach the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ait ben haddou; visit of the kasbahd and lunch in a local restaurant, then continue to the palm grove of Skoura, created in the 12th century by Yacoub El Mansour. It is dotted with many earthen fortresses resembling gigantic sand castles, such as the Kasbah Amerhidil. The palm grove is irrigated by a network of small canals called khetara.
Continue south towards the Valley of Roses and the Dades Valley, where almond trees bloom in February, fruit trees and many crops, it is called the orchard of southern Morocco because abundantly watered by wadis / rivers which descend from the High Atlas. It is also called the "valley of 1000 kasbahs" because of the many adobe fortresses, recalling the not too distant period when the Berber tribes of the mountains and the desert clashed. Night in the Dades Valley or in the middle of the Gorges.
After breakfast and visit to the large canyons and sand rocks called the Monkey Toas, we will head to the Tinghir palm grove, the gorges plunge into the mountain through impressive cliffs. In Todra, you are here facing two sheer cliffs 300 meters high, separated by a narrow twenty meter corridor: an unforgettable sight to photograph. lunch on the way or picnic in the palm grove of Tinghir.
After lunch we will continue towards Merzouga and the large sand dunes of Erg chebbi, while driving you will notice that the sand is already making some appearances, and the palm grove is getting bigger, bigger, it is the Tafilalet, with more of 1 million date palms. The Tafilalet offers splendid desert landscapes punctuated by palm groves and refreshing, Towards Merzouga, the desert appears little by little, with its endless wide spaces and its dunes of fine orange ocher sand ...
Welcome to the Sahara. Stop at the hotel before going to your nomadic tent camp on foot (1h30 walk) or by camel to enjoy the sunset over the crest of the dunes. Dinner and overnight in a traditional tent.
Enjoy the sunrise over the ridge of the dunes. Extend the desert effect before heading to the Draa Valley. The road runs alongside Jebel Ougnate and Djbel Saghro. Desert and lunar landscapes, punctuated by tiny oases where the winter nomads Ait Atta settle under their large black tents, "the khaimas". They make a living from sheep and goat farming in these rugged and austere landscapes. After the villages of Alnif, we will take the direction of the Drâa valley to reach the oasis of Nkob, then the kasbah of Tamnougalte, a former caravan stopover.
Built in the 16th century when large caravans traded between Tafilalet and Timbuktu, Ksar Tamnougalte, is the capital of the Berber Mezguita tribes. It was a strategic point on the large caravan route as gold from Sudan was transformed and minted into silver. Still inhabited by the same families, it has retained its authentic architecture, typical of southern Morocco.
After breakfast and a short walk in the palm grove of the Draa valley, we will return to Marrakech, in Ouarzazate we will stop to visit the Kasbah taourirte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, built at the end of the 19th century and renovated by unesco since 1995. After lunch in Ouarzazate, we will return to Marrakech through the High Atlas mountains.
